First image is based on old legends that there was huge trees (todays mountains) which gives life to small ones we have now and create all nature, imagine that. The second one shows according to many religions, cultures and very old navy maps how Earth looks like in center there is "tree of life" so called Yggdrasill. You can find references in many, many things. But who knows :) It's an old story...
